Anaesthesia at Menai Animal Hospital

At our hospital, your pet’s safety is our top priority with every anaesthetic procedure. We believe in providing comfort and ensuring freedom from pain and anxiety throughout their stay. From admission to discharge, we monitor your pet’s well-being with a dedicated nurse by their side every step of the way.

Menai Animal Hospital - Anaesthesia - Health Check
Dr Kay, our experienced vet, administers all anaesthetics and, along with a vet nurse, monitors your pet with the same care and precision you’d expect in a human hospital. We are well aware of the risks and take every possible step to minimise them. Before administering anaesthesia, we perform a thorough physical examination and collect blood samples to check for clotting, diseases, and any factors that might affect the anaesthetic and surgical outcome. We also provide a premedication to ease anxiety, manage pain, and stabilise blood pressure and anaesthesia levels.

An ultra-short acting injection is used to induce anaesthesia, followed by maintenance on a gas mixture to continuously monitor breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels. Our state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and experienced vet nurses ensure that your pet’s heart, breathing, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen level, and blood and expired CO2 are meticulously monitored for a safe procedure. IV fluids are typically given as a precaution during procedures.

In recovery, your pet is closely monitored until they are fully awake. By the time of discharge, your pet should be almost back to normal, although some may feel sleepy or tired for 12 to 24 hours, especially if they’ve received strong pain relief.

If you have any concerns about your pet undergoing anaesthesia, please speak to us. While there is always a risk with any anaesthetic, our careful approach ensures that the risk of anaesthesia is far lower than the risk of driving from your place to our hospital.
