Vet Surgery at Menai Animal Hospital

At some stage in your pet’s life, they may need a surgical procedure, which can be a stressful time for owners. At our hospital, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional care during and after surgery, ensuring the safest outcomes and results.

Menai Animal Hospital - Vet Surgery
Dr Kay brings extensive surgical training from both Australia and overseas, while our highly trained staff are skilled in assisting with anaesthesia and supporting her during procedures. You can trust your pet is in expert hands.

At our vet hospital, we use state-of-the-art monitoring systems, just like those used for humans, ensuring your pet receives the best care. Our anaesthetic machines meticulously monitor oxygen levels, carbon dioxide output, heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. Prior to surgery, every patient undergoes a pre-anaesthetic blood test, allowing us to thoroughly assess their blood clotting and internal health.

During anaesthesia, we utilise specialised heating equipment, such as bear huggers, to maintain your pet’s optimal temperature throughout and after surgery. For added safety, we may administer IV Fluids as needed. Post-surgery, your pet will have a dedicated nurse by their side throughout the recovery process.

Our purpose-built operating theatre for major surgeries is designed for seamless operation. We use top-quality instruments and suture materials, all of which are autoclaved before every use —ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and care.

Pain relief is a top priority for us; no pet should endure pain. While in our hospital, we treat your pet with the same love and care we would give our own.

Emergency Surgery

We always strive to accommodate every emergency, even if the pet is not our regular patient. If you call our number: 02 9541 1455 and leave a message, please wait 10 minutes. If you haven’t heard back from us by then, proceed to one of the emergency vets listed on our answer machine.

Types of Surgery We Offer

Desexing

Desexing in female patients involves removing the ovaries and uterus, and in males, the removal of the testicles. These procedures are also known as spaying in females and castration in males.

This is a day surgery; drop your pet off between 8am and 10am, and collect them after 3pm. Upon arrival, we perform a health check and take a blood sample for testing. If your pet seems anxious, we administer a pre-med early; otherwise, they receive it just before surgery. This relaxes them and provides pain relief well before the surgery concludes.

Dr Kay excels in desexing, using keyhole surgery for quicker recovery, with sutures under the skin, eliminating the need for suture removal and preventing your pet from pulling or licking them.

Dental Surgery

We provide regular dental health checks, including polishing, scaling, fluoride treatment, and extractions. We also perform surgical extractions, root canal therapy, and fillings.

All pets are anaesthetised for dental treatments. Note that we perform dental surgeries on rabbits as well as dogs and cats.

Anal Gland Surgery

We treat abscessed anal glands and, for persistent problems, can safely remove the glands without causing incontinence. This effectively keeps your pet comfortable and free from anal gland issues.

Broken Bones

Depending on the severity of the break, we use various procedures, including plates and screws or pins, to repair bones.

Patella Surgery

We offer various patella surgeries to suit individual patient needs, followed by a rehabilitation period after home rest.

Gastropexy

For dogs at risk of bloat, we perform surgery to suture the stomach to the rib wall, preventing twisting.

Cryosurgery

Using liquid nitrogen, similar to human treatments for skin cancers and skin tags, we treat your pets’ skin conditions, frequently addressing cancers on cats’ noses and ears.

Surgical Inseminations

We perform surgical inseminations using chilled or frozen semen, a non-invasive day surgery with quick recovery. We also offer transcervical insemination using an endoscope.

Lump Removals

All lumps should be examined by your vet. Problematic lumps are best removed. We offer laser options for cutting and removing lumps, which is particularly useful in some cancers. We also remove lumps through surgical excision and offer histopathology services. We use dissolving sutures when possible.

Caesarean Sections

We perform both elective and emergency caesareans, equipped with specialised resuscitation tools for healthy puppies. Our humidity crib provides newborns with heat, humidity, and oxygen if needed.
We have equipment to revive puppies if necessary, and our live puppy survival rate is around 99%. We ensure puppies feed from mum before going home, or provide bottle feeding if needed.
All mothers receive antibiotics and pain relief. Our staff are available to assist you in raising your new family.

Eye (Ophthalmology) Surgery

Dr Kay, passionate about eye health with postgraduate ophthalmology training, is confident with all types of eye surgeries, including third eyelid flaps, entropion, ectropion, extra eyelash removal, corneal ulcer treatment, and cherry eye repair.

Ear Surgery

We routinely perform ear surgeries, including aural haematomas, ear canal surgery, foreign body removal, and tumour removal.

Cruciate Ligament Surgery

We offer several methods tailored to the pet. Our cruciate ligament surgeries have a high success rate, with patients returning to running within 8-10 weeks with minimal exercise restrictions. We perform these surgeries alongside deep tissue laser and rehabilitation courses.

Wound Repairs

We treat various injuries, from cuts and abscesses to major repairs following dog fights or car accidents.

Foreign Body Removal

For pets ingesting foreign objects, we remove items such as corn cobs, coco palm nuts, underpants, socks, feminine hygiene products, Lego pieces, parts of dog toys, and squeakers.

Breathing-Related Surgery

We enhance your pet’s quality of life by improving airflow. We shorten elongated soft palates, widen stenotic nostrils, and operate on everted laryngeal saccules, ensuring better throat space for improved oxygen intake. Our anaesthetic techniques ensure smooth recovery.
