Cleo’s Christmas 2nd Chance

“We are so pleased we took Cleo to the vet that afternoon as we hate to think what might have been…Don’t ever take your pets for granted as they can’t tell you what’s wrong”, Julie says.

Three days till Christmas the house is decorated, the presents are wrapped, all the holiday plans are underway, what can possibly go wrong?  Unfortunately for Cleo’s family, Christmas 2016 brought more than they bargained for.

11 year old Cleo the Kelpie was the dream dog from the start for owners Julie and Stuart. She had a wonderful temperament & loved nothing more than attending the yearly Kelpie muster with her son Slider & her human family.

Just days before Christmas, Julie was about to take Cleo out for her daily walk when she found her lying down near the front door very weak and uninterested in her walk which was quite out of character. Her owners became very concerned at this character change & increasingly so after offering Cleo her favourite treats, she would lay there motionless. A feeling of panic kicked in for owners Julie & Stuart.

Julie immediately took Cleo in to see Dr. Kay at Menai Animal Hospital for some testing and was given the terrible news that Cleo had a large mass in her spleen. Cleo would need urgent lifesaving surgery to have her spleen removed for her to have any chance of survival.

“It was an anxious time for us as she is a special part of our family and not having her with us over Christmas was very difficult”, Julie says.

Cleo was in a critical situation, her spleen had ruptured due to the size of the mass. Dr Kay & her team did everything they could. It was a long surgery, Cleo had a large amount of internal bleeding & her spleen had to be removed.

Cleo made it through the surgery but was not out of the woods yet, Cleo remained in critical care for days following on from her surgery to ensure there was no further internal bleeding & she was able to eat & pass food.

Finally Dr Kay cleared Cleo to go home on strict bed rest & medication, her owners were over the moon to have her home. With each day that went by, Cleo had a glimpse of joy back in her eye. Her owners could see an improvement and every day she seemed more like herself again.

“We are so pleased we took Cleo to the vet that afternoon as we hate to think what might have been…Don’t ever take your pets for granted as they can’t tell you what’s wrong”, Julie says.

Cleo is now a happy, healthy 12-year-old who runs around with her son Slider as if nothing had every happened. Thanks to Dr Kay & her team, Cleo will enjoy a much longer, happier & comfortable life.
